Dragon Ball Z is about finding the dragon balls and fighting to defend them, and the earth. It all started when an old man found a space pod with a young baby with a tail (A Sayijin) in it. He named the alien Goku. The young boy was sent to earth to destroy all the humans so that the sayijins could sell it as an A class planet. Goku fell and hit his head, though and forgot about destroying earth and became a fun loving kid.
One day a woman named Bulma came to the old man's house and tricked Goku into helping her collect the dragonballs. Goku had never seen a girl before so he had gladly agreed to help her.
Goku mastered everything he tried to and won every contest he entered (except the fight with Tien). Goku defended the earth sevral times. One time Goku destroyed an evil namekian who, in his dieing moment, through an egg , carrying Piccolo, into the mountains.
For most of Piccolo's young life he was over thrown with the obsesion of revenge on his fathers life.
